Jason R. Canvasser is a Member in Clark Hill's Detroit office where he practices in the Litigation Practice Group. Jason’s practice focuses on advising clients on best practices for managing and avoiding potential risks and liabilities. Jason has broad experience representing clients in general litigation matters that include complex commercial cases, contractual disputes, defense of premise liability and auto negligence claims, landlord-tenant matters, and issues relating bankruptcy/creditor’s rights. Jason has significant experience in state, federal, and bankruptcy courts and has been admitted pro hac vice in multiple out of state matters.
As part of his practice, Jason also routinely represents national clients on a number of issues relating to the sale of alcohol, both on-site and off-site. These clients include restaurants, bars, pharmacies, grocery stores, manufactures, distributors, hotels, and convenience stores. As part of that representation, Jason regularly advises clients, among other things, on issues relating to alcohol promotions, tasting events, sampling promotions, charity events, and zoning issues. As a result of Jason’s vast experience, he is in frequent contact with the Michigan Liquor Control Commission (MLCC) and works closely with the MLCC commissioners to achieve his client’s desired goals.
Additionally, Jason handles all aspects of cannabis related licensing, land use and litigation in Michigan.
Jason received his B.A. from the University of Michigan and his J.D. from Wayne State University Law School, where he was a member of the Wayne State Law Review. He is admitted to practice in Michigan and the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan. He is also a frequent lecturer for Lorman Education Services on the Enforcement of Judgments.
