James R. Foley
James R. Foley is a member in Clark Hill’s Intellectual Property practice group. His extensive experience is focused in effectively all areas of intellectual property. Specifically, he has extensive experience with regard to patent licensing. In this context, he has travelled all over the world, and has successfully negotiated with (and in some cases litigated against) several substantial concerns. These substantial concerns have included, for example, Apple, Archos, Audiovox, Coby, Imation, Microsoft, Motorola, Nokia, Philips, RIM/Blackberry, SanDisk, Samsung, Sony, Thomson, and several others. In addition to patent enforcement and licensing, Jim prepares, files and prosecutes patent applications, some in complex areas such as semiconductor fabrication and electrical engineering-related applications. Jim also has a very extensive trademark practice, and he manages the trademark portfolios and trademark enforcement of several large companies. Jim also has much experience quickly and effectively transferring intellectual property all over the world, such as is required after a merger or acquisition.
Jim’s areas of expertise include semiconductor fabrication, fasteners and installation equipment, automotive-industry related inventions, software, business methods, medical devices, and agricultural equipment.
Jim received a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, majoring in General Engineering and minoring in Electrical Engineering, and appeared on the Dean's List. He received his J.D. from the John Marshall Law School, where he was editor of Associate Publications, John Marshall Law Review, and was a member of the John Marshall Law School Trademark Law Moot Court Team which placed third in the country.
He is admitted to the U.S. Patent and Trademark office, is licensed to practice in Illinois and Iowa, and is a member of the Iowa Trial Lawyers and American Bar Associations.
