Clifford G. (Gary) Cooper II assists clients to secure and protect their intellectual property rights. He further advises clients on related matters pertaining to the clients’ patents, trademarks, trade secrets, and copyrights.

Gary prepares client-specific strategies to protect innovations in a variety of fields, including those in the automotive, agricultural, industrial, packaging, metallurgical, electrical, and cannabis industries. This often includes working with clients to determine the patentability of their inventions, and their freedom to operate those inventions in the United States. Through close communication with his clients, Gary also works to develop a strong understanding of his clients’ technologies to prepare and prosecute specific, tailored, and detailed patent applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark office (USPTO). Gary also works closely with a network of foreign and international associates to expand and protect his clients’ intellectual property portfolios through prosecution of patent applications in patent offices around the world.

In trademark matters, Gary works with clients to determine the availability of his clients’ brands for federal or state registration. Gary has successfully prepared and prosecuted numerous state and federal trademark applications and has worked with clients to enforce the rights of established trademarks. Gary has also represented clients in appeals before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, in petitions to the Director of the USPTO, and in disputes related to infringing domain names.

Gary’s practice additionally includes representation of clients in a variety of litigation matters, from disputes regarding trademark or patent infringement to those related to nonpayment of goods or services, construction lien enforcement, and misappropriation of funds placed in trust through the Michigan Construction Lien and Builders Trust Fund Acts. Gary also works to facilitate collection of judgments entered in his client’s favor and has negotiated or otherwise facilitated numerous advantageous settlements for his clients.
