Pro Bono & Community

Clark Hill encourages its attorneys to engage in public service via pro bono work. In addition to pro bono legal services, Clark Hill has a strong legacy of civic and professional leadership at the local, regional, and national levels. Understanding that leadership not only makes a positive contribution to the community, but also helps our attorneys gain perspective, hone their skills, and build connections that are valuable to our clients, we encourage and support all types of leadership endeavors.

Under the direction of the firm’s pro bono coordinator, the dedicated and committed attorneys of Clark Hill provide an average of more than 30 hours of law-related charitable activities, per attorney, each year.

Immigration attorneys represent select individuals in asylum and other humanitarian cases on a pro bono basis, often through cases referred by nonprofits like the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) and Catholic Charities. The attorneys participate in clinics put on by state and local governments, AILA, the DC Bar, and other nonprofit and governmental organizations. they collaborate with organizations providing humanitarian and other assistance including the Immigrant Defenders Law Center, Al Otro Lado, and the Haitian Bridge Alliance.

Additionally, the firm has actively participated in the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association’s Legal Services Clinic since the Clinic first opened in the late 1990’s. The firm’s attorneys have taken on several new pro bono matters each year from the Clinic and have handled a wide range of matters through this program, including landlord-tenant, consumer protection, home repairs, insurance coverage, wills and trusts, and real estate.

The Firm also accepts pro bono matters referred to it by other sources, including Focus Hope, Community Legal Resources, and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. In addition, several firm attorneys are active participants in the American Bar Association’s Death Penalty Representation Project.

Clark Hill attorneys serve on many of the most influential nonprofit boards in our communities, including the American Red Cross, YMCA, Community Foundation for Southeastern Michigan, Detroit Historical Society, Hudson-Webber Foundation, and Accounting Aid Society.

As a firm, Clark Hill regularly commits financial support to organizations making a difference in our communities, including food banks and the Legal Services Corporation.
