Clark Hill Adds Alex Pérez to San Antonio Office

January 18, 2022

Clark Hill today announced the addition of Alex Pérez as a member of its Tax Services Practice. Pérez will work in both the firm’s San Antonio and Mexico City offices. He joins Clark Hill from Sañudo Pérez, PLLC, in Mexico City and San Antonio, which he co-founded and co-owned.

Pérez’s practice focuses on tax and business transactions in both U.S. domestic and international settings. His significant transactional experience includes structuring private equity investments from Mexico into the U.S. He is certified in tax law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and fluent in both Spanish and English.

“Alex has handled a wide range of tax and other business matters for leading multinational companies and high net worth families in Texas and Mexico for many years,” said Marty Roos, Member in Charge of the San Antonio office.  “In addition to being a key contributor to the continued growth of the firm’s tax practice, working with Stanley Blend in San Antonio, he will also be instrumental in helping us expand our presence and build out our office in Mexico City.”

Pérez has experience both in-house and in the law firm setting. He was formerly the managing partner of the San Antonio, Midland, and Denver offices of Burleson, LLP, and a member of the Management Committee of the 130-member firm serving the energy industry.  Prior to that he was Associate General Counsel for a publicly-traded European medical device company, where he was part of the executive leadership team and directed all legal and FCPA compliance matters in Europe, Asia, and Latin America.

“Clark Hill provides an international platform, excellent lawyers, and a broad range of sophisticated legal services that my clients increasingly require to launch their businesses and achieve their business goals,” said Pérez. “There is a very strong alignment between my tax experience and capabilities and the cross-border practice I have been building and Clark Hill’s expansion goals in Mexico.”

Early in his career, Pérez was a trial lawyer at a large civil and products liability defense firm, where he first-chaired 22 trials to verdict, and undertook second-chair responsibilities on many other litigation matters, leading hundreds of depositions, mediations, arbitrations, and hearings.

A graduate of St. Mary’s School of Law, Pérez earned an LL.M. in Taxation from New York University School of Law and a B.S. from Purdue University. He is a frequent speaker on tax and business law topics in both Spanish and English and serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Texas-San Antonio, where he lectures on a range of subjects, including, U.S. tax laws, business law, and FCPA issues.

In addition to his legal practice, Pérez has served with distinction for several years as a member of the Board of the San Antonio Area Foundation. He is currently Chair-Elect of the organization. Critical Risk Mitigation Provisions for Design Contracts — Part 1: Waiver of Consequential Damages

An essential element of architect and engineer contracts with their clients is the treatment of risk sharing between the parties. Design professionals who are typically simply providing services for a fee, and who are not investors who will share in the profits of a successful project, can ill-afford to expose themselves to unlimited liability for negligent errors and omissions in the performance of their services. Architects and engineers would argue that it is fundamentally unfair to expose them to unlimited downside risk when they do not directly participate in the upside profit potential of the projects they design. Owners and developers would counter that this is why design professionals carry professional liability insurance. But even simple design errors can lead to liability that is many times greater than the amount of such insurance.
