For more than two years, Clark Hill intellectual property attorneys Bill Cramer and Tim McCarthy have helped Plus Brand Industries achieve patent protection and published status in several markets globally.
Cramer and McCarthy have helped Plus Brand establish its unique All-Scratch!® technology, which is a label scratch surface on plastic, glass, aluminum, and cardboard containers. All-Scratch!® technology allows the owner of a consumer-packaged product, like a can of soda or a bottle of water, to scratch their name, initials, an image, or any simple identifying mark directly onto the label of the product.
“A big use for this so far has been with corporate events with hundreds of people attending. These labels easily eliminate confusion over bottle or can ownership at a large gathering and therefore reduce waste in the process,” Cramer said. “It’s a simple idea, but no one had perfected how to do it. I think it has a big potential for growing even more.”
According to a Plus Brand press release, what makes the label unique is its ink composition and layering to be durable enough for transport yet soft enough to scratch with nothing other than a fingernail.
“This is really a good example of someone who saw a need and set out to solve it, McCarthy said. “He hired a scientist to solve it, and after a couple of years, they got it working and it’s become a very useful invention.”
Plus Brands credited the work of McCarthy and Cramer as being integral to its success.
“The internationally recognized Clark Hill has led the charge when it comes to Plus Brand national and international patent projects. With over 135 years in business, very few firms carry with them the pedigree and prestige of Clark Hill. From the very beginning, Timothy McCarthy has led strategy while also working closely with William Cramer who specializes in the prosecution of trademark, patent and copyright applications as well as litigation of disputes. Their combined experience has played a large role in ensuring defensibility of the Plus Brand intellectual property.”
