Clark Hill Combines with Conrad O'Brien Adding 18 Litigators in Philadelphia

February 1, 2023

International law firm Clark Hill announced today that it has combined with Philadelphia-based litigation firm Conrad O’Brien, effective February 1, 2023. The combination adds 18 seasoned litigators to Clark Hill’s robust Litigation practice group. They join four former Conrad O’Brien attorneys who came to Clark Hill in late 2022.

“We’re pleased to welcome the Conrad O’Brien team to Clark Hill and look forward to a long and successful collaboration with them,” said John Hensien, Chief Executive Officer of Clark Hill. “In combining with top-notch firms like Conrad O’Brien that share our commitment to client service, diversity and professional development, Clark Hill has strategically grown to meet our clients’ evolving needs. Our expansion in recent years enables us to attract and retain outstanding talent and broaden our depth of service offerings internationally. Today’s news is exciting for our firm, for the Philadelphia office and for our clients.”

Founded in 1984, Conrad O’Brien built a reputation for its professional liability defense practice and commercial litigation prowess in bet-the-company cases, as well as a nationally known Title IX practice. The firm’s attorneys routinely earn top rankings from Chambers USA and Best Lawyers in America.

“Law firms, like many businesses, go through evolutions. We’re confident that for our clients and our colleagues, combining with Clark Hill is the next best step for us,” said Nicholas Centrella, previously Managing Partner at Conrad O’Brien, and now a Member at Clark Hill. “Being able to offer our clients access to a wider array of legal services and provide our lawyers with increased professional opportunities was very attractive to us. But what set Clark Hill apart is its culture. They’re collegial, collaborative and committed to diversity, equity and inclusion, all of which makes it an attractive place to work and to expand upon the culture of Conrad O’Brien.”

With the announcement of the Conrad O’Brien combination, Clark Hill’s Philadelphia office will have doubled in size since the start of 2023. In January 2023, Clark Hill announced that the real estate boutique firm of Larsson & Scheuritzel also joined the Philadelphia office.

“It’s an exciting time to be in Clark Hill’s Philadelphia office,” said Lauri Kavulich, Member-in-Charge of the Philadelphia office. “Our new colleagues bring a wealth of litigation talent to the firm. I look forward to getting to know and working with all of them.”

Clark Hill’s litigation team of more than 200 attorneys advocates for clients from all industries, helping them to resolve matters and maintain focus on their business goals. Clients benefit from the firm’s experience in resolving matters prior to reaching the courtroom through negotiation, mediation, facilitation, arbitration, and administrative proceedings before state and federal agencies. When litigation is preferred or required, Clark Hill attorneys have the extensive trial experience needed to resolve matters.

Critical Risk Mitigation Provisions for Design Contracts — Part 1: Waiver of Consequential Damages

An essential element of architect and engineer contracts with their clients is the treatment of risk sharing between the parties. Design professionals who are typically simply providing services for a fee, and who are not investors who will share in the profits of a successful project, can ill-afford to expose themselves to unlimited liability for negligent errors and omissions in the performance of their services. Architects and engineers would argue that it is fundamentally unfair to expose them to unlimited downside risk when they do not directly participate in the upside profit potential of the projects they design. Owners and developers would counter that this is why design professionals carry professional liability insurance. But even simple design errors can lead to liability that is many times greater than the amount of such insurance.
