Clark Hill Strasburger’s Elizabeth Copeland Confirmed to U.S. Tax Court

Aug 31, 2018

San Antonio – Clark Hill Strasburger is proud to announce that the United States Senate has confirmed Member Elizabeth Copeland to the U.S. Tax Court. Senators approved her appointment on the evening of August 28 in a voice vote.

“We are incredibly proud of Elizabeth,” noted Clark Hill’s CEO John J. Hern, Jr. “Her commitment to tax law and to service are well-known at Clark Hill Strasburger and in the legal community,” San Antonio Member-in-Charge Marty Roos added. “Elizabeth’s passion for the tax law and the application of its fairness to the taxpayer is extraordinary.  Her Texas colleagues, clients, and friends are very proud of her and know she will be an outstanding judge.”

Elizabeth was nominated by President Trump in August 2017 and was approved by the Senate Finance Committee in June 2018. She had also previously been nominated by President Obama in May 2015, but that nomination lapsed without a vote.

Elizabeth is Board Certified in Tax Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and her practice is focused on civil tax controversies. She has experience handling offshore voluntary disclosure matters, employment tax disputes, tax collection matters, innocent spouse representations, IRS Appeals and Tax Court litigation.

Elizabeth is a former Attorney Advisor to the United States Tax Court and, since leaving the Court, has secured many victories for taxpayers. In the January 2013 edition of Tax Notes®, she was named one of the 2012 Top 10 Tax Attorneys of the Year, along with Mitt Romney and Chief Justice John Roberts, Jr., of the U.S. Supreme Court. She has received numerous awards and acknowledgements such as the Best Lawyers in America, San Antonio’s Best Tax Law Attorneys, and the Janet Spragens Pro Bono Award as presented by the American Bar Association Section of Taxation.

Elizabeth was responsible for creating the United States Tax Court Pro Bono Program on behalf of the State Bar of Texas Tax Section, the first statewide program of its kind in the nation. That program is now used as a model for other low income taxpayer programs. She dedicates a substantial amount of time to representing lower income taxpayers in contesting unfair tax assessments. She also recruits and trains volunteer attorneys to help with representing low income taxpayers.

Elizabeth represents the values of excellence and service of our firm. Clark Hill Strasburger heartily congratulates Elizabeth on her confirmation.
