Peter R. Thompson

Pete Thompson counsels governmental entities, including school districts, colleges, and housing authorities, on a variety of compliance, employee, and litigation matters. Specifically, Pete assists those entities on compliance with the Texas Public Information Act (TPIA), Texas Open Meetings Act (TOMA), Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), discipline and termination, employee investigations, EEOC complaints, contract drafting and review, and policy drafting.

Compliance with the statutes noted above can be unexpectedly burdensome for clients and frequently requires action under narrow timeframes. Pete empowers clients to respond quickly and efficiently to any issues that may arise under TPIA and TOMA which may require correspondence with the Attorney General’s office. As a former member of the news media, Pete understands the nature of challenging deadlines and provides governmental entities advice on crisis management when under pressure due to unwanted publicity.

In addition, Pete counsels clients on multiple environmental matters, including RCRA and Clean Air Act compliance, reporting requirements for Texas public water systems, defense support in enforcement cases, and Freedom of Information Act requests. Pete identifies responsible third parties in the remediation of leaking underground storage tanks (USTs) and negotiates agreements to transfer liability to responsible parties. Pete also provides compliance audit and counseling on Public Water Supply obligations for operators of water wells serving chain of commercial food and retail establishments.

Pete maintains an active pro bono practice and represents numerous clients who are fleeing persecution and seeking asylum in the US.
