Katy David represents tax-exempt entities and counsels clients on tax matters, including federal income taxation and state margin and sales taxation.
Exempt Organizations of all sizes rely on Katy to guide them at formation, during their operation and growth, and—when necessary, through wind-down and dissolution. She helps clients obtain and maintain their tax-exempt status, develop appropriate corporate governance, sustain their operations, and operate effective development and planned giving programs. When an organization experiences an unusual opportunity or difficult challenge, the Board of Directors and executive leadership turn to Katy to help them make decisions that comply with state law and the Internal Revenue Code, and that support the organization’s mission and strategy.
Katy also helps businesses and individuals minimize their state and federal tax liability. She structures entities and transactions to support her clients’ businesses and save money. In particular, clients rely on her to guide them through complex Section 1031 exchanges and Section 1033 involuntary conversions. When necessary, Katy defends clients in audits by the Internal Revenue Service and Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts.
When you talk with Katy, you can expect her to walk through the pros and cons of a proposed course of action, like any lawyer would. But, she reliably follows with, “If it were my call to make, I would do this… and here’s why.” Clients often remark to Katy, “Wow! You explained that really well.” When she hears this, she knows she’s doing the job she came to do: equipping her clients with the information they need to make the best possible decisions.
