James E. Brenner was admitted to the State Bar of Michigan in 1972, and serves as "Of Counsel" with the Firm's Detroit office. He received his undergraduate education from the University of Detroit, his Master of Arts from Wayne State University, and his legal education from the University of Michigan. Between 1967 and 1969, he served as an officer in the U.S. Army.
Jim specializes in appellate practice and is listed in The Best Lawyers in America for his appellate practice work. He has also been named a Michigan Super Lawyer and recognized as a Top Lawyer by dBusiness Magazine and was selected as a Michigan Lawyer of the Year for 2007 by Michigan Lawyer's Weekly, one of only 12 so chosen out of some 40,000 Michigan lawyers. Besides his appellate practice, Jim also represents clients in commercial litigation, insurance law, and employment benefits, particularly as related to ERISA.
In addition to his regular law practice, Jim has acted as a commercial arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association and a hearing referee for the Michigan Civil Rights Commission, and currently chairs Neighborhood Legal Services of Michigan, a leading provider of legal aid services. Jim's publications include articles on insurance law, international law, and death penalty representation.
