Edward C. Hopkins Jr.
Edward C. Hopkins Jr. counsels corporate clients on the world’s privacy laws and enforcement trends, as he helps them with legal compliance and policy management, incident response management, consumer and workforce privacy, data processing agreements, and related litigation.
Drawing from his experiences as a veteran U.S. Air Force acquisitions and comptroller officer, federal government contractor, and defense industry entrepreneur, Ed takes a defensive approach to corporate privacy legal compliance and program management for his clients. He is convinced that proactively avoiding data privacy crises, while preparing to respond to the unavoidable ones, is a better business strategy than reactively scrambling to respond to a data breach, malicious insider’s theft of trade secrets, or cyberattack.
Ed’s mission is to help business leaders in the aerospace, cannabis, defense, education, government contracting, healthcare, investment management, legal services, hospitality, online retail, and travel industries assess, improve, design, and implement data privacy management programs that comply with state, federal, and international privacy laws and mitigate risks.
There are hundreds of privacy laws that govern corporations doing business in the United States or globally. Among the laws on which Ed routinely advises corporate clients are the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), Colorado Privacy Act (CPA), Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA), Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act (VCDPA), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA), Canada’s Digital Charter Implementation Act (DCIA), European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), United Kingdom’s General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR), and the evolving privacy laws of the world’s other economically powerful nation states.
An International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) Fellow of Information Privacy (FIP), Ed holds all the IAPP’s certifications. He is a CIPP/US, CIPP/G, CIPP/E, CIPP/C, CIPP/A, CIPM, and CIPT.
