Clark Hill Attorneys to Present at the 2017 MCMCFC Spring Management Conference
GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Clark Hill attorneys Nancy L. Farnam, Steven K. Girard and Nicole M. Paterson will present during the 2017 Michigan County Medical Care Facilities Council (MCMCFC) Spring Management Conference June 5-8 in Harbor Springs, Michigan. Their presentation, Legal Updates, will include a year in review – significant political, legal and regulatory changes affecting MCFs, preparing for and surviving the litigation of an employment claim and mechanisms and options for funding Facility OPEB obligations. Attendees will participate in an interactive program with the group focusing on ADA, FMLA, Civil Rights, employee benefit, and other up-to-the-minute issues affecting MCFs. Farnam has over 20 years of experience representing private and public sector employers in the design, drafting and taxation of welfare benefit plans, qualified retirement plans and non-qualified deferred compensation plans. She has extensive experience counseling employers on various welfare plans, including self-insured and insured health plans, cafeteria plans, health reimbursement arrangements and health savings accounts, and assisting with compliance under the Affordable Care Act, HIPAA, COBRA and other laws. She also represents third party administrators of medical and cafeteria plans on numerous issues affecting their clients.
Girard is a member in Clark Hill’s Labor and Employment Practice Group. He has specialized in the area of labor and employment law since 1986 and his practice includes representation of private sector businesses, health care entities and municipal entities, including counties, cities, townships, villages, community mental health agencies, road commissions, central dispatch authorities and county family independence agency boards. The majority of Girard's practice involves the negotiation of collective bargaining agreements. He presently serves as regular labor and employment counsel to numerous Michigan cities and counties. In this capacity he has acted as chief spokesperson on hundreds of collective bargaining agreements (including initial and renewal contracts).
Paterson, an Associate with the Labor & Employment and Education & Municipal Practice Groups in Clark Hill’s Grand Rapids office, represents a diverse group of clients operating in both a union and non-union environment, including long-term care facilities, hospitals, non-profit organizations, municipalities, corporations, and school districts. Prior to practicing law, Paterson worked for more than six years in Human Resources. Her experience and perspective gained while working in Human Resources gives Nicole an insider’s knowledge of the day-to-day issues that employers and school districts face.
