Clark Hill Attorneys to Present at International Council of Shopping Centers Michigan Continuing Education Program for Real Estate Professionals February 11, 2016 in Novi, MI

Detroit, MI – Clark Hill attorneys Jason R. Canvasser, Timothy M. Koltun, and Richard A. Sundquist will present at the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) 2016 Michigan Continuing Education Program for Real Estate Professionals at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, Michigan on February 11, 2016.

Titled “Driving Value and Avoiding Potholes on Recovery Road”, the program is focused on best practices in dealing with every aspect of Shopping Center real estate development, leasing, and management. Clark Hill attorney Paul S. Magy is the Program Chair of the event and a Past State Director for the ICSC in Michigan.  

Canvasser will present “Premises Liability – It Is Not Just ‘Slip and Fall’: What Every Owner, Manager, Broker and Contractor Needs to Know.” Koltun and Sundquist will present “Who Doesn’t Want a Happy Ending? Issues to Be Addressed in Connection with the Surrender of Possession at the End of the Lease Term.”  Participants will receive 6 Hours of Michigan Continuing Education Real Estate Credits. The purpose of The International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) is to advance the shopping center industry and to promote its role in the commercial distribution of consumer goods and services by:

  • Providing educational programs and publications in all aspects of shopping center development, finance, management, marketing and other specialized areas of professional interest;
  • Conducting meetings and other programs designed to promote the exchange of ideas among members and to facilitate the conduct of their business;
  • Collecting and disseminating information pertaining to the shopping center industry, including statistical data and other statistical research;
  • Developing and maintaining professional certification programs to encourage high standards for shopping center professionals;
  • Advocating the interest of the shopping center industry to local, state/provincial, federal and international governmental bodies; and
  • Publicizing to the general public promotional and educational shopping center business information.

Canvasser is a Senior Attorney in Clark Hill's Detroit office.  He has extensive experience representing clients in general commercial litigation matters, premises-liability matters, landlord-tenant matters, issues relating to bankruptcy/creditor’s rights, and in real estate transactions.  Jason routinely counsels clients regarding liquor licensing and zoning matters and serves as a member of the City of Birmingham’s Board of Zoning Appeals.

Magy is a member of Clark Hill's Real Estate Practice Group practicing in the firm’s Birmingham office. His extensive commercial real estate experience includes acquisition, development, finance, zoning, leasing and sale of commercial real estate, in addition to litigation related to those areas, including receiverships, distressed assets and retailer bankruptcy. He also has a substantial amount of experience representing all forms of commercial property owners, developers, property managers and brokers.

Koltun is the practice group leader for Clark Hill's Real Estate Services Practice Group and his practice is devoted almost entirely to matters involving real estate. He has extensive experience in the sale, acquisition, development and leasing of residential, retail, office, industrial and hotel projects. Koltun has represented clients in complex sale/leaseback transactions involving commercial properties located in several states, and projects involving the utilization of tax credits and public and quasi-public funding.

Sundquist is a member in the Detroit office of Clark Hill PLC where he practices in the Real Estate Services Group and is adjunct to the firm’s Bankruptcy, Corporate, Litigation and Commercial, Real Estate and Public Finance Practice Groups. Sundquist has a broad range of experience in reviewing, negotiating and drafting leases and other real estate documentation for commercial, industrial and residential projects.
