Clark Hill Attorneys John L. Gierak and Joseph B. Urban to Present “The New Nuts and Bolts of Collective Bargaining in the Post Reform Era” to the Metro Bureau
– Clark Hill attorneys John L. Gierak and Joseph B. Urban will present to the Metro Bureau, “The New Nuts and Bolts of Collective Bargaining in the Post Reform Era”, Wednesday, February 29 from 9 – 2 at the Birmingham Conference Center. Although the legislature has provided school districts with powerful new tools to control costs, success in the post-reform era is not guaranteed. As always, success in bargaining depends upon the courage, skill and preparation of the Board and it negotiations team. Gierak and Urban will provide an intensive review of the principals of labor negotiations for K-12 school administrators working in the area of school labor negotiations. Gierak and Urban will emphasize the basic steps of achieving the district’s bargaining goals and tools to adapt the bargaining strategy to the new legislative reforms.
Gierak co-chairs Clark Hill’s Education and Municipal Practice Group, and focuses his practice in the areas of labor and employment law, education law, and litigation. Gierak represents public and private employers in all aspects of labor and employment law, including contract negotiations, as well as acting as general counsel.
In the area of education law, Gierak represents and advises public school districts and charter schools in the areas noted above. In addition, he counsels clients in matters of constitutional law, tenure and election law, the Revised School Code, special education, vocational education, student discipline, Open Meetings Act, Freedom of Information Act, Title IX, and civil rights.
Urban is a member in Clark Hill’s Birmingham office, where he concentrates his practice in the areas of municipal finance, education law, and real estate law.
Urban routinely represents school employers in the areas of collective bargaining, grievances and arbitration, unfair labor practices, wrongful discharge and the day-to-day matters arising in personnel administration.
With respect to education law, Urban regularly counsels school districts and public school academies in the operational issues involved in administering educational organizations, including compliance with the Revised School Code, the Open Meetings Act, the Freedom of Information Act, and other laws governing public bodies.
Urban has represented Michigan school district and municipal clients, as well as private entities providing financing to these organizations for over a decade. He has extensive experience in municipal and school finance, regularly serving as bond and underwriter’s counsel for school districts, public school academies, and other governmental units as well as counseling them in the acquisition and disposition of real property and the design and implementation of deficit elimination plans.
