GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Clark Hill attorneys Barbara A. Ruga and Kara T. Rozin will present Essentials of Human Resources for School Leaders during the Michigan Association of School Personnel Administrators’ (MASPA) 44th Annual Winter Conference. The conference will be held November 30 – December 2, 2016 at the Lansing Crowne Plaza Hotel in Lansing, MI.
MASPA advocates on behalf of the personnel and/or human resource function, works to enhance member professional growth, actively supports diversification of the work force, serves as a resource agency, and promotes the highest standard of personal and professional conduct and professional ethics to ensure quality instruction and service to Michigan students. Ruga is a member in Clark Hill’s Grand Rapids office where she practices in the Education and Municipal Practice Group as well as the Labor & Employment Law Practice Group. Ruga advises and counsels public and private employers on a wide variety of labor law and employment issues. She has extensive experience negotiating public school contracts in a context of scarce resources. She has also handled numerous unfair labor practice charges, fact-findings, OCR and EEO claims, and related employment litigation. Ruga advocates for prevention through education and, to that end, specializes in employee training programs to clients and public school organizations.
A past president of the Michigan Council for School Attorneys, Ruga has been recognized by her peers as a leader in the school labor negotiations field through the prestigious Harlow Claggett award, received for her contributions to public school labor negotiations, and is frequently asked to speak at industry conferences throughout the state. In addition, Ruga was recently designated Grand Rapids' 2016 "Lawyer of the Year" for Education Law in the 22nd Edition of Best Lawyers in America. Only a single lawyer in each practice area in each community is honored as the "Lawyer of the Year."
Rozin, a Senior Attorney in the firm's Education Practice Group, dedicates her legal practice to enriching the quality of education for students by assisting educators in state and federal legal matters. She represents Michigan public school districts and private employers in an array of labor and employment law and litigation matters. For the last eight years, Rozin has defended school districts and employers in claims alleging employment discrimination, retaliation, wrongful termination, violation of constitutional or civil rights, sexual harassment, intentional torts and other related matters. Rozin also serves to protect the interests of school districts and private employers during quasi-judicial proceedings such as investigations by the Department of Education, Office of Civil Rights, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Michigan Department of Civil Rights. These investigations include Complaints alleging violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Family Medical Leave Act, Title VII, Title IX, Age Discrimination in Employment Act and the Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act.
