Clark Hill Attorney Joseph B. Urban to Present During the 14th Annual Michigan Association of Public School Academies Conference
BIRMINGHAM, MI
– Clark Hill attorney Joseph B. Urban will present “Charters and Unions – Shotgun Wedding or Armed Truce?” at the 14th annual Michigan Association of Public School Academies conference at Cobo Center in Detroit. The session, beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 7, will explore the concept of union organizing efforts in Michigan charter schools. Joe will be joined by Clark Hill attorney Ann VanderLaan and also by a retired K-12 school administrator. Topics for discussion in this panel-like session will include why employees organize (with an emphasis on school employees), aspects of the organizing campaign and thoughts about life after the organizing campaign, regardless of the outcome.
Joseph B. Urban
is a member in Clark Hill’s Birmingham office, where he concentrates his practice in the areas of municipal finance, education law, and real estate law.
Joe routinely represents school employers in the areas of collective bargaining, grievances and arbitration, unfair labor practices, wrongful discharge and the day-to-day matters arising in personnel administration.
With respect to education law, Joe regularly counsels school districts and public school academies in the operational issues involved in administering educational organizations, including compliance with the Revised School Code, the Open Meetings Act, the Freedom of Information Act, and other laws governing public bodies.
Joe has represented Michigan school district and municipal clients, as well as private entities providing financing to these organizations for over a decade. He has extensive experience in municipal and school finance, regularly serving as bond and underwriter’s counsel for school districts, public school academies, and other governmental units as well as counseling them in the acquisition and disposition of real property and the design and implementation of deficit elimination plans.
