40 under 40 list of professionals for 2012. Kopietz is a member in Clark Hill’s Detroit office, where he practices in the Real Estate Group. Since 1991,

Crain’s

has honored 40 of the community’s high achievers with its 40 under 40 awards. Kopietz was selected for his ability to navigate and facilitate financing for real estate deals in Detroit.


Crain’s

cited specific financing work under Kopietz’s oversight during the past year has totaled more than $500 million.

reported Kopietz has advised the College for Creative Studies in structuring the financing and incentive package for the A. Alfred Taubman Center for Design Education (Argonaut Building redevelopment).

“This deal included a range of financing, such as historic and brownfield tax credits, New Markets Tax Credits and tax-exempt bond financing. Kopietz has worked with the Thompson Education Foundation on financing for charter schools and on financing for The Auburn, a mixed-use project of apartments and storefronts,”

Kopietz focuses his law practice in the area of economic development representing lenders, investors, nonprofit and for profit developers, municipalities, syndicators, underwriters and governmental authorities. He has extensive experience with a variety of tax credits and incentives including Low Income Housing, Renewable Energy, Historic and New Markets Tax Credits as well as state tax credits, tax abatements and “Green” incentives.

Kopietz has successfully closed transactions involving more than $500 million in tax credit related investments since 2007. As a LEED Accredited Professional (AP), Kopietz is one of the small number of attorneys nationwide to obtain a certification which distinguishes professionals who have demonstrated a thorough understanding of green building practices and principles and the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System™. He is also experienced in choice of entity planning, formation and maintenance, and incorporation and qualification of tax exempt organizations and regularly advises clients on Federal, state and local tax issues.

Prior to joining Clark Hill, Kopietz was the Chief Operating Officer of a nonprofit agency which provided affordable housing and health services in Southeast Michigan.
