He has been endorsed by members of both parties and by the Oakland County Republican Party, Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson and Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard.
Oakland Community College is governed by a seven-person board of trustees. The members of the board are elected on a non-partisan, at-large basis by voters living within the college district, an area that generally coincides with the boundaries of Oakland County and parts of Washtenaw, Livingston and Lapeer counties. Trustees serve as volunteers and are not paid for their services. Oakland Community College has 5 campuses, 22,000 students and an annual budget of $173 million.
Murphy’s top three priorities are to (1) maintain affordable tuition and quality education to prepare students to succeed at their career goals; (2) to improve student retention rates (43-48%) and graduation rates (11%); and (3) for the OCC budget to advance fiscal responsibility while maintaining quality education for students in an environment of likely declining revenue.
