BIRMINGHAM, MICH. – Clark Hill attorney Thomas F. Sweeney has been named Chair of the 52nd Annual Probate and Estate Planning Institute. The program, sponsored by the Probate and Estate Planning section of the Michigan Bar and organized by the Institute of Continuing Legal Education (ICLE), consists of three half-day sessions held twice a year. In addition to his role as chair, Sweeney will present on “Creative Uses of Trust Protectors” at both sessions, May 17-19, and June 15-16. His presentation will examine the selection and limitations of the powers, duties and discretions of the trust protector; the relationship between the trustee’s and trust protector’s powers, duties and discretions; and the flexibility in the timing and naming of a trust protector.
Sweeney is actively involved in the planning and administration of revocable and irrevocable trusts, estates, and family limited partnerships and companies. He has extensive experience in Federal and State taxation with particular focus on estate and gift taxation, fiduciary and individual income taxation, including planning, return preparation, negotiation with tax authorities and tax litigation. In addition to his role as chair of the Council of Probate and Estate Planning section of the Michigan Bar Association, Sweeney served as chair of the Taxation Committee of the Oakland County Bar Association and has frequently spoken at ICLE programs in the past. He is an adjunct professor on estate and gift taxation at the Wayne State University Law School and has guest lectured on the subject at the University of Michigan Law School. Sweeney has been included in Best Lawyers in America since 2003.
The 52nd Annual Probate and Estate Planning Institute provides the latest information on Michigan tax law changes and insight on the next steps for estate recovery. The first live session takes place May 17-19 at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa in Acme, Mich. The second live session takes place June 15-16 at The Inn at St. John’s in Plymouth, Mich. Both sessions are approved for credit by the Institute of Certified Bankers.
