Clark Hill Attorney Scott Cruz to Present on Topic of Independent Contractors at 1871 on March 22, 2017
CHICAGO, IL – Clark Hill attorney Scott Cruz will present “He’s an Independent Contractor…Or is He? Answer Carefully?” at 1871 on March 22, 2017. Just as the desire to hire independent contractors gains in popularity, so has the crackdown by the Department of Labor, the Internal Revenue Service and the Illinois Department of Employment Security on employee misclassification. In this seminar, Cruz will discuss the following:
- The different tests used by each of these agencies for determining who is and who isn’t an independent contractor;
- The tax and wage implications depending on the classification;
- The advantages (and dangers) of the independent contractor designation; and
- The practical considerations for protecting your company from government scrutiny for misclassification.
Cruz represents employers in all aspects of labor and employment law, including civil litigation and preventative counseling. He assists employers in drafting employment policies, employment agreements, and non-competition and non-solicitation agreements. Scott represents employers in state and federal courts and administrative agencies involving claims brought under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, retaliatory discharge, breach of contract, labor arbitration and class actions. Scott also has handled unemployment audits before the Illinois Department of Employment Security, in addition to defending unemployment compensation claims.
