Practice overview
Clark Hill international law attorneys advise clients on a variety of issues related to cross-border trade, finance, distribution, transportation, joint ventures, immigration, dispute resolution, employment law, estate planning and taxes. With our location on the U.S.-Canadian border in a Metropolitan area of greater than five million population -- the ninth largest market in the United States -- we are part of a $20 billion dollar cross-border trade industry (the largest border crossing in the United States in terms of dollar value). In addition, our market area is headquarters to the worldwide automotive industry, with operations and sales in virtually every country in the world. Our experience in international issues spans globally - including work in Asia and Europe.
Our clients benefit from not only our experience and perspective, but also from the resources available through our attorneys' memberships in legal networks containing firms with whom we have regular contact in over 80 countries. These are firms in which we share similar quality controls and rate structures, who have specialized knowledge and extensive local contacts in their respective countries. A recent example of the usefulness of these contacts, we were able to get a distributor agreement reviewed by counsel in 22 countries and get comments to the client within a matter of two weeks for an average cost of less than $2,000 per country. In another recent transaction, we were able to advise a client concerning setting up manufacturing operations in China using a British Virgin Islands entity.
We also represent numerous foreign companies with business interests in Michigan and surrounding states. Examples of these companies include:
- Daimler-Chrysler AG (Germany)
- ThyssenKrupp AG (Germany)
- Valeo S.A. (France)
- Toyota Motor Car Company (Japan)
- Severstal Steel (Russia)
- Bayerishce Motoren Werke AG (Germany)
