Summer Associate Program
Our 10-week Summer Associate Program is an integral part of our firm’s recruitment of associates. We hire Summer Associates with the intention of offering each of them positions as full-time associates; that is, we do not hire a large class of students and then decrease the class by extending a small number of full-time offers. As with our lateral attorney recruitment, we look to recruit the finest and most talented law students who share our core values and would thrive in our entrepreneurial environment.
As a Clark Hill Summer Associate, you are afforded the same work environment as that of an associate who has just joined the firm upon graduation. There is no distinction in work assignments, client contact, development or responsibilities. All practice groups in the firm may provide assignments to you and from all offices. However, if you express an interest in a particular practice area, we can accommodate a more specific focus.
As a Summer Associate, you will begin your summer experience with a week-long training program. During this time, you are exposed to the major support functions of a law firm, including conflict analysis, library services and a range of software and technology training. We also assign a mentor to you in order to help you become acclimated to both your local office and the firm as a whole. View more information on our Professional Development Program here. To assist with your self-evaluation and with career planning, you will receive feedback at the completion of each project and performance evaluations at the midpoint and end of the 10-week program. Clark Hill also assigns an Associate Liaison to our Summer Program. This Liaison, who is a member of our Recruiting Committee, holds weekly progress meetings with our Summer Associates and is available for one-on-one meetings.
Our Summer Associates attend the annual firm retreat, practice group meetings, in-house training and seminars. We also offer, in conjunction with the legal services clinic in the cities in which we have offices, a unique opportunity for Summer Associates to work on pro bono matters. Social activities are also planned throughout the summer to give our Summer Associates the opportunity to get to know our attorneys outside the workplace. Activities from prior years include professional baseball games, dinners at a member's home, a wine tasting party, community service events and other outdoor activities. Each year, our Summer Associates tell us that we strike the right balance between after-work events and workdays devoted to client assignments and professional development.
