Matthew T. Smith Presents for National Business Institute

LANSING, MI – Clark Hill attorney Matthew T. Smith presented the “Complete Guide to Consumer Debt Collection in Michigan,” at the National Business Institute Seminar on June 15.  Smith focused his speech on preventative collection practices, documentation, pre-suit collection strategies, filing the lawsuit and collecting the judgment.

Smith is a member in the firm’s Lansing office.  He focuses his practice on commercial and construction-related matters.  Smith also has experience in bankruptcy, creditor’s rights, real estate and civil litigation.

Smith joined the United States Marine Corps in 1993 and achieved the rank of Major. After earning his law degree, he practiced bankruptcy, real estate and corporate law. In 1995, he returned to active duty for the Marines and attended Naval Justice School in 1996, receiving certification as a Judge Advocate of the United States Marine Corps. Smith served as government counsel, defense counsel, and as a Special Assistant United States Attorney for the Marine Corps' Office of the Staff Judge Advocate in San Diego, California. He returned to Michigan in 1999 to practice creditors' rights law, construction litigation, and  real estate and corporate law, while also working for the U.S. Marine Reserves.

Smith is admitted to practice in Michigan, the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan, the U.S. District Court of California, and the U.S. Navy-Marine Corps Court of Criminal Appeals. He is a member of the American Bar Association, Ingham County Bar Association and the State Bar of Michigan.

Smith received a B.A. degree in Financial Administration from Michigan State University, where he received several scholarships and awards. He earned his J.D. with honors from the University of  Detroit Law School. He resides in Mason, MI.
