Jane Luxton of Clark Hill PLC’s Washington DC office explains that U.S. businesses have a federal compliance obligation to try to keep conflict minerals out of their products. These are tin, tantalum, tungsten, and gold produced in the Eastern Congo and sold to finance armed conflict in the Congo and neighboring countries.

There are similar laws in some states, including California, relating to the use of human slavery in the production of goods sold in the state.
