The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 ("ARRA") includes provisions that expand the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985 ("COBRA") by providing a federal subsidy for the payment of COBRA continuation coverage for certain employees and covered family members.

Under the ARRA, plans are required to notify certain current and former plan participants about the availability of the COBRA premium subsidy.  The Department of Labor ("DOL") has issued model notices to assist plans in complying with the new requirements under the ARRA.  Each model notice is designed for a particular group of qualified beneficiaries and contains the information necessary to help satisfy the notice requirements under the ARRA.

The model notices can be obtained from the DOL website at http://www.dol.gov/ebsa/COBRAmodelnotice.html.
