ALERT:
Special
Federal Strike Force Team to Focus on Detroit
and Surrounding Area Health
Care Providers
The Department of Health and Human Services
("HHS") Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Attorney General
Eric Holder Jr. announced the expansion of special Medicare Fraud
Strike Force teams that will be focusing on Detroit and surrounding
community health care providers.
This announcement was simultaneous with the launch of a
newly created Health Care Fraud Prevention and Enforcement Action
Team ("HEAT"). HEAT is a new interagency effort by
HHS and the Department of Justice ("DOJ") to investigate
Medicare fraud and abuse.
According to the HHS press release, Medicare Fraud
Strike Forces were established in 2007. The Medicare Fraud
Strike Force teams apply a "data-driven" approach to
identify unexplainable billing patterns and subsequently investigate
the related providers for possible fraudulent activity. The
Medicare Fraud Strike Force team operating in South Florida convicted
146 defendants and secured $186 million in criminal fines and civil
recoveries according to HHS and the DOJ.
