Obama Announces $17 Billion in
Targeted Budget Cuts
The Administration announced the full
details of its Fiscal Year 2010 (FY10) Budget today for the federal
government. Typically, the Appendix, which contains the full
programmatic detail, as well as the Analytical Perspectives and
Historical Tables are presented to Congress in February.
However, Office and Management and Budget Director Peter Orszag is
attributing this year's delay to the transitional nature of this
year's Presidency.
As a part of this detailed account of the FY10 Budget, the
Administration has targeted over 100 programs for reductions and/or
terminations, amounting to $17 billion. Some of the proposed
cuts include the termination of programs such as the Environmental
Protection Agency's (EPA) Local Government Climate Change Grant
Program, the Department of Energy's Oil Research and Development
Program, EPA Water Infrastructure Earmarks and the Department of
Education's Student Mentoring Program.
Republicans and a number of outside interest groups are quick to
point out that $17 billion is not significant when the President's
FY10 Budget proposes to spend more than 200 times what these cuts
would save.
Congress approved the President's FY10 Budget Outline in a joint
resolution upon returning from its Easter Recess, a $3.4 trillion
blueprint for discretionary and non-discretionary federal spending
for the upcoming fiscal year between October 1, 2009 and September
30, 2010.
