Russ Kolsrud is Leader of Clark Hill’s Health Care Practice Group and is a senior trial lawyer for clients with commercial disputes, health care controversies, managed health care litigation, transaction disagreements and disputes with government regulatory and licensing agencies. His areas of practice include behavioral healthcare, managed care litigation, creation and operation of managed care organizations, government regulatory compliance, insurance contracts, medical malpractice defense, public contracts and procurement, and commercial and real estate transactional disputes. Russ has defended disability claim denials for General American Life Insurance and for Paul Revere relating to the acquired General American disability product. He also has experience in denial of coverage claims regarding life and disability policies.
Russ has been in private practice since 1985, and has been a partner or member of law firms since 1988. Prior to that, he served in the Arizona Attorney General's Office as a trial lawyer for seven years representing the State of Arizona in complex civil litigation, and appeared before the United States Supreme Court on two occasions. He also served as law clerk for the Honorable William Eubank of the Arizona Court of Appeals and as a clerk in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington. Russ received his law degree with distinction from the University of Puget Sound, and his undergraduate degree from Arizona State University. He has been a member of the Federal Bar Association since 1977, and was president of the Arizona chapter in 1986-87. He has been a member of the American Bar Association since 1975, and was admitted to the Washington State Bar the same year. He has been a member of the State Bar of Arizona since 1977, serving as the Chairman of the State Bar's Environmental and Natural Resource Section in 1987-88, and as a member of the State Bar's Arizona Appellate Handbook Committee Editorial Board since 1980. Russ has been a member of the Maricopa County Bar Association since 1978 and has been a Judge Pro Tem for the Maricopa County Superior Court since 2003. Russ is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the 9th Circuit; the U.S. Court of Claims; the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. District Courts for the Western District of Washington and the District of Arizona.
Russ has been active in the community in many capacities. He has been a member of the Madison Educational Foundation in Phoenix for several years, is a past member of the Heard Museum Men's Council, and participated in various Little League activities as a coach and sponsor. He served for six years on the Phoenix Industrial Development Authority, and also was appointed to the Encanto Village Planning Committee while he lived in Phoenix. He has also received a Citation of Merit from the Office of the Governor in Arizona for achievement in representing and protecting the Arizona State Land Trust. Russ is a Council appointed member of the Scottsdale Industrial Development Authority. Russ is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys hiking and scuba diving, and also is an avid rock collector. He has been married for 35 years to wife Nancy, also an attorney. Their son is a prosecutor for the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, and their daughter, also a lawyer, practices Native American Indian Law.
