James E. Brenner was admitted to the State Bar of Michigan in 1972, and serves as "Of Counsel" with the Firm's Detroit office. He received his undergraduate education from the University of Detroit, his Master of Arts from Wayne State University, and his legal education from the University of Michigan. Between 1967 and 1969, he served as an officer in the U.S. Army. James specializes in appellate practice and heads Clark Hill's Appellate Practice Department. James is listed in The Best Lawyers in America for his appellate practice work, and was recently selected as a Michigan Lawyer of the Year for 2007 by Michigan Lawyer's Weekly, one of only 12 so chosen out of some 40,000 Michigan lawyers. Besides his appellate practice, James also represents clients in commercial litigation, insurance law, and employment benefits, particularly as related to ERISA. Besides his law practice, James has also acted as a commercial arbitrator for the American Asbestos Association and a hearing referee for the Michigan Civil Rights Commission, and currently chairs Neighbor Legal Services of Michigan, a leading provider of legal aid services. James' publications include articles on insurance law and international law. James belongs to the Michigan Bar Association. James concentrates his practice in appeals, trials, and insurance law and, relative to that practice, advises and represents clients in matters of benefits law. He serves as an arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association, as a hearing referee for the Michigan Civil Rights Commission, and as a director of Wayne County Neighborhood Legal Services.
