Daniel J. Bretz is the Co-Chair of Clark Hill’s Labor & Employment Law Practice Group and serves on the firm’s Executive Committee. Dan represents clients across the entire spectrum of employment and labor law. His clients include the health care, transportation, construction, automotive and hospitality industries. He has served as first chair in class actions and individual cases involving discrimination, harassment,
contract and labor issues. Chambers USA: Leading Lawyers for Business describes Dan as “a leading light among litigators.” Dan is a respected advocate, counselor and leader. His expertise includes:
- Title VII, ADEA, ADA, FMLA, FLSA, and state law harassment, discrimination, whistleblower and retaliation claims
- Breach of contract, wrongful discharge, defamation, non-compete, and trade secret cases
- Class action litigation
- Complex commercial and business litigation
- Negotiating collective bargaining agreements
- NLRB proceedings and trials
- Trying discharge and contract interpretation arbitrations
- Serving as an independent Arbitrator and Mediator
- Drafting high level executive agreements and employment contracts
- Advising and training clients on personnel policies, documentation and supervisory relations
- Consulting with management on union organizing, corporate campaigns, and collective bargaining issues
In 2009 and 2010, Dan was named one of the Top 10 Lawyers in all of Michigan by SuperLawyers Magazine. Dan is rated “#1” in the highest tier of Michigan labor and employment lawyers by Chambers USA: Leading Lawyers for Business. He has been listed in Best Lawyers in America since 1998. He is a recipient of the “Barrister of the Year Award” from the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association.
In 2009, Dan served as Chair of the Labor and Employment Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan, consisting of over 2,200 employment lawyers. He is a member of the American Bar Association’s Labor and Employment Law Section, and the ABA’s EEO Sub-Committee. Dan is also a member of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers, and the American Employment Lawyers Council. Dan is a contributing author to Employment Law In Michigan, 2nd Ed. He has authored several articles and papers on collective bargaining, union organizing, the Family Medical Leave Act, sexual harassment, and litigating employment discrimination claims. He is a frequent speaker on labor and employment issues before various groups such as the ABA, the Michigan State Bar, and the Michigan Institute for Continuing Legal Education.
